One of the most important lessons of the dot-com bust has been that not all vertical markets lend themselves to conducting business on the Internet. Travel, career services and personal finance are notable for staking out healthy slices of the online commerce pie. Grocery shopping is tops among a long list of category failures. But there are certain web strategies that are universal and should be applied by executives in all industries. The most successful web companies, such as eBay, eLance, Foliofn, Salary.com, don’t simply reside in industries that are web-friendly, they implement strategies and follow fundamental business practices that enable them to thrive on today's Internet. This session will examine the strategy commonalities of some of the most successful Internet companies to provide attendees with guidelines that they can apply to their own web businesses, in their own industries. It will demonstrate how even in a business that changes as fast as the Internet, some strategies are timeless.
