The clock is ticking as Magento 1 creeps towards an end. Magento shared that their software support for this version of Magento will cease on July 1, 2020 which means several things for anyone still running on the platform.
First and foremost, security bug fixes will no longer be rolled out. This is obviously a concerning issue since bugs in the code can be exploited by cyber criminals. In a recent blog we’ve discussed the importance of web security for your brand’s website. Typically, one of the main reasons updates come out in software is to combat against these types of security flaws. You don’t want to play around when your customer’s information, your company’s data, your brand, and your reputation are on the line.
The second aspect worth pointing out is that this means you could become un-compliant with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI DSS) which require you to “develop and maintain secure systems and applications”. These standards are a set of rules constructed by payment service providers which are meant to keep payment card data secure. As an ecommerce business, you want your customers to feel confident that when they put their information in for a payment that it won’t be compromised.
With the support stopping within the next few weeks, you are left with a couple options:
- Continue using an outdated version of Magento and hope nothing goes wrong
- Upgrade to Magento 2 if you’re happy with your Magento experience to this point
- Migrate to a new eCommerce platform altogether, such as the fast-growing BigCommerce
We’ve seen the industry begin to shift from platforms such as Magento to BigCommerce. BigCommerce is a Software as a Service (SaaS) cloud-based solution built to scale and ready take your online business to the next level. One huge upside is that BigCommerce takes care of your hosting and infrastructure maintenance while you worry about other tasks like how to customize your online store. Since BigCommerce both hosts and maintains your platform, they are the ones that take care of making sure you are PCI compliant.
